Ciudad Vieja

Ciudad Vieja, as the name explains it, is the oldest part of Montevideo. Its classically relaxed and small town attitude combined with beautiful colonial architecture makes it one of the most photogenic parts of the city.

Ciudad Vieja is home to el Mercado del Puerto (Market of the Port). Though full of life and buzzing with activity, this is not the part of Montevideo one would go to conduct any type of corporate business. This is more of a tourist area full of beautiful antique shops, restaurants and small boutiques. An old queen's dream.

Due to the fact that Ciudad Vieja is right off the water, almost any direction you head in is bound to lead you to the highway which borders the ocean. There you can go on to beautiful walkways that go outward into the ocean and take in the spectacular view.

I couldn't make my way all the way down that thing without taking a picture as testimony of my actions.

Though it may not represent it accurately, those in-water walkways are much larger and longer than they appear to be. To the point where Andre and I got a bit scared of being thrown off by a wave or the wind. If that risky adventure isn't really your cup of tea, you might prefer walking down the highway adjacent sidewalk where you are guaranteed to take in just as good a view and even catch some sites of cultural and historical value as well.
