La Casa Rosada

"The Pink House", this is the name given to the building that houses the procedures of Argentina's government Executive Branch. Though many believe the president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, to live in La Casa Rosada, the truth is that this building is, for the most part, a museum and work space for different legislators and the president herself. In reality, the president usually lives at a special compound in the neighboring area of Los Olivos.

Though the Casa Rosada is a beautiful and unique building, the highlight of the area, to me, is the Plaza de Mayo which is located directly across. This Plaza has a statue and plaque commemorating the nations independence and story, a beautifully kept park filled with well groomed hedges and lawn and some very old and large government office buildings that, if anything, show off the nations rich architectural history.

It's too bad, though, that due to Argentina's regular political and economic problems, so many of the buildings have fallen victim to vandals and protesters. I'm not suggesting that they are wrong to voice their discontent, on the contrary, i think their cause is justified; but, not only am I very much against defacing public property, I also feel that historically important structures, such as these, should be preserved.
